Tonic: Dinner Rehersal invites

I ended up making a few variations to this wedding dinner rehearsal that I really enjoyed. This was fun to work on. I'll see what the client says.

Inspiration, fall 2010

These are my favorite commercials right now. The first half are from Allstate, the others are from Gieco.

VisAd: Rosedale, A problem to solve part 2

Well.... Dmitri and I got together for a little chat in class today, and I feel like we have some similar ideas surrounding the farmers market aspect of health problems in Rosedale. We pointed out two problems in the market that we could chose to work on.

1) Food availability/awareness in the farmers market
-people don't know what produce is in season at any given time (this could lead to unwillingness to attend the farmers market)
+This could possibly lead to a list of available produce, a list of kid friendly foods/meals
/recipes, an icon system that would break the language barrier, or any other things that
could bring people back to the local aspect of a farmers market.
+Local parents would be our primary audience, but we should talk to workers, people that
frequent the market currently, people that don't go on a regular basis, and the Rosedale
          Farmer's Market Team.

OR

2) Awareness of the farmers market in general
-people don't know about it
-how accessible is it?

+we would want to focus on parents that don't know about it, so it relates back to the idea of healthy kids, but we'd want to talk to people that go, all people that don't go, people that work there, and the Rosedale Farmer's Market Team.

Tonic: Dasher board

This is an advertisement I did that is going up inside a hockey arena somewhere in KC. This is for the City of Independence. The place where the ad is going is called a "dasher board." Pretty sweet stuff.

MMEXP: Web 2.0005

T2 posted a link on facebook of 32 "beautiful single page sites." The brief body copy was obviously written by someone that doesn't boast fluent English skills, but it still makes a good point (that single page sites are more beautiful and convenient if done correctly and that they yield interesting results). 1, 8 and 25 each have specific things that I particularly enjoyed. I'm not saying any single one of these sites is perfect, but a few of them have inspired me. So why don't you check it out already?

VisAd: Rosedale, A problem to solve

There were two issues that kind of resonated in my mind after our tour/talk with the Rosedale girls. One is the language barrier. The area is so mixed that it's hard to talk to everyone with any sense of completion on any one issue. I also keep thinking about the farmers market and how people didn't go because they didn't know where the watermelons were in the middle of winter- aka- people don't know what's in season.

Hometown: Plano, Texas
Income: 14k
Been going to dives since age 16
Frequents Dave's Stagecoach Inn, Harling's Upstairs, DBCooper, Chez Charlie
Goes "diving" twice a week, generally with friends

1 DEFINING "DIVE"
-there's an older, more regular crowd
-"you know you're in a dive when you're in a dive"
-you get more random weird stories from dives than from "normal bars or restaurants"
-more bar than restaurant
-cheaper prices
-"no" to food (doesn't go to dives to eat)
-goes a lot for shows
- "the bartenders are way better even if they're not your friend"
-stereotypes- playboy pinups in the bathroom, old alcohol paraphernalia, juke box that "kinda works"
-"cheap beer.... drunk bitches.... pool sharking
-"they just kind of exist. You're not sure how or why they do, but they just kind of make it.

2 NEW DIVES
generally just shows up to  new dives by way of friends/word of mouth
-won't drive far, wants to stay close

3 PERSONAL EXPERIENCE WITH DIVES
generally goes with friends
not considered a regular anywhere, but people would recognize him and probably know his name
-goes out because friends are out, friends with some of the bartenders or bands that play at dives
-50/50 on if he'll dive hop or stay at one place
-some have shows, other times it's to meet up with friends to "just get fucking hammered and make mistakes"

4 COMMUNITY
Yes he feels like part of a community
-everyone knows everyone
-you sit and talk with people that you may not be "friends with" but "if you're in your twenties and you hang out -you see the same people most of the time (reliable)

5 NET SHARING
minimal net sharing currently
thinks he'd get more involved if there was a site like ours
-uses facebook for event organization and meet-ups
-he'd want to find out about specials/special events

COMMUNITY

Mascot? Quirky trait? Vincent Skaggs (been going to dives for 40-50 years) and David Buoy
"We open at 9am and the crowd is generally 52+ years old. Every hour the age drops seven years
What makes a dive a dive? lighting, personality, intimacy, the smell - "Every dive has a smell. Ours is cooled meat grease and fresh popcorn."
Cliental- body hair, body odor, tattoos. This is kind of their last resort "they know better than to fuck up."

Rose (a patron): Cheap beer, pool, juke box = dive
Patron that wished to remain nameless: they all come for powerball night

MMEXP: Research: Evan Davies and Dave's Dive

Luke and I took a little trip to Dave's Stagecoach Inn to start getting the feel of dives and the general atmosphere. We met up with my friend Evan while we were there and interviewed him as our "persona." The bartender was incredibly helpful and we interviewed him as well. He asked for us not to use his name. After talking with him more I don't know if he was joking or not, so better keep it simple. I'll post the interview results sometime tomorrow, but I was excited about the pictures and wanted to get them up. Enjoy.... (blogger sucks and I'll post the rest tomorrow).

MMEXP: Community Poster sketches, a few random thoughts

The first image is of a few poster idea sketches Luke and I talked about. I really like the idea of two separate posters that fit together to make one bigger poster. The top left design would just have an overlapping photo (each side relevant to each side of the poster it represents) and an overlapping title. Top right would have a unified photo and a unified shape, representing parts of a whole, like the bottom left idea. The bottom right would have a "die cut" shape in the middle that would be formed by the two sides of the poster. The second photo shows an idea for a navigation. Luke mentioned that some dives have a wall that they let patrons draw/write/sign on and I thought it would be cool to crop a section of the wall and use the individual shapes/forms to create or navigation. The last photo is the rest of that image, with the first few quick poster layout idea sketches (my god what a mouth full) and then a brief list of a few name ideas.
