Typo 4: Conference: Theme

a written paragraph about your conference theme is due next class period. define/describe the depth and breadth of your typographic focus as well as its importance to the field.

TYPOGRAPHIC FRAGMENTATION

This will be a hands-on/analogue typographic experimentation conference based on the concept of fragmentation. This involves found type/computer generated type that is altered in various ways. Mirrors, scissors, reflection, photography, etc. Negative and positive space will be explored, altered, and ultimately fragmented. The final outcomes will be physical/tangible products that will be digitally captured and documented. The computer has over taken most aspects of the design world. People rarely rely on analogue methods anymore. Why use a mirror when you can "do everything in photoshop." The purpose of this conference will be to prove that analogue can produce beautiful outcomes that may never be generated by a computer. The computer is expendable, type is easily replicated. Analogue type is unique and un-duplicate-able.

-- as a designer, would you pay money to attend this conference? why or why not?
Yes because I think that it would get people to think outside of the realm of the digital and get people and a lot of designers back to the analog form to start experimenting.

-- does the theme invite multiple interpretations and an interesting range of possible talks, workshops, etc?
I believe it does. I believe it might have not only designers but photographers and others interested in something other than the digital to make it interesting and incorporate more into their work.

-- is the theme suitable for contemporary and forward-looking design practice?
I believe that design is like a lot of other things where the old can always be made new, so I think that this is another collaboration of it to get more people back into the analog before the digital phase to help them to understand their own work and to expand their knowledge base.

-- what could improve the theme?
Maybe broadening it more to exploration of analog and no digital allowed. and maybe just a making conference on new techniques or learning how to use their computers to make it look like old techniques. Also, maybe past fragmentation to just dealing with reflection and only hand based ways of making it look good. Back to hand crafting beautifully.
